officer accidentally shoots self at range

MERCED — Officials are not releasing the name of a Merced police officer who shot himself by accident Friday. The veteran officer was placing his gun in his holster, Matthews said, during routine monthly training at Merced Police Department's firing range on Gove Road when the firearm went off. The officer was hit in the leg by the bullet, and taken by helicopter to a Modesto-area hospital.
